Opening Conventions

In ACOL Bridge, the number of points and shape of your hand will determine whether you are able to open the bidding.

Below is the bidding convention used by bridgetrainer.

This convention is designed as a BASIC approach for beginners. Experienced players will use a more complex and fluid bidding system.

Balanced Shape is 5, 3, 3, 2 or 4, 4, 3, 2 or 4, 3, 3, 3 and all other shapes are Unbalanced.

  • If you have 4 Clubs and 4 Diamonds, then your preference is Clubs.
  • If you have 4 Hearts and 4 Spades, then your preference is Hearts.
  • If you have 4 Clubs or Diamonds and 4 Hearts or Spades, then your preference is for the Major suit
  • If you have 5 Clubs and 5 Diamonds, then your preference is Diamonds
  • If you have 5 Hearts and 5 Spades, then your preference is Spades.
  • If you have 5 Clubs or Diamonds and 5 Hearts or Spade, then your preference is for the Major suit

If the sum of your points PLUS the sum of your 2 longest suits = 20 or more, then open 1 of your longest suit
