If you’ve looked at the Lesson on Scoring, you will have seen it refers to types of contract. The score you receive relies on the type of contract you are in. There are essentially three Types of Contract:
With Part Game, Game and Small Slam contracts you can also make ‘overtricks’. These are tricks taken over and above the number required to make the contract.
Types of Contract – tricks bid and made
1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1NT |
2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2NT |
3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3NT |
4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4NT |
5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5NT |
6 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 6NT |
7 | 7 | 7 | 7 | 7NT |

As you will have seen in the Scoring Lesson, the Bonus points you make depends on the Type of Contract you are in and whether you are Vulnerable or not (see also Lesson on Vulnerability) . In summary these are:
Type of Contract |
Non Vulnerable |
Vulnerable |
Part Game/Score |
50 pts |
50pts |
Game Contracts |
300 pts |
500 pts |
Small Slam |
500 pts |
750 pts |
Grand Slam |
1000 pts |
1500 pts |
Remember that you have to bid and make the requisite number of tricks to gain these Bonus Points. If you are for example in a Contract of 2NT and you make nine tricks ( the same number needed to make 3NT), you still score the Part Game Bonus of 50 pts!
